1732 Viola d'Amore by Giovanni Fiorillo, Ferrara, Italy

This incredible instrument is a bit of an anachronism in that it was converted into a modern viola sometime in the 19th century. It was as common to "update" the viola d'amores that survived as it was to put new longer necks on Baroque violins. The large flat back and sloping sholders of this instrument retain hints of its original powerful, slightly nasal tone. The beautiful flame-shaped soundholes and exquisite filigree scroll remind us of the beauty of early instruments such as this. The original instrument may have had as many as 9 bowed strings as well as a set of (now gone) sympathetic strings which produced a medieval like drone when the main strings were bowed. This instrument is used exclusively on "Frost."

  1880s Tyrolean Violin

While not labelled with the makers name and location, the varnish and stylized edges of this violin place it as a late 19th century Tyrolean instrument. The violin has an exceptional imitiation old -style varnish and a haunting, melancholic tone with a touch of reverb built in! A perfect spooky fall sound to serenade cascading brittle leaves...! This instrument is featured on "Music Box" and also is the violin used on the Changelings "Mercury" ep.

1820s Hungarian Viola
(image coming soon!)

Paul fell in love with this dark old 15 1/2" (smaller) viola the first day of work at the violin shop. Its varnish is a beautiful oxblood-black cherry brown color and its edges suggest that it is Central East European in origin. Its diminutive size belies its rich, dark sound but takes off some of the deeper edge of larger violas. This instrument inspired the track tentatively titled "Autumn" and also plays a pizzicato line in "Music Box." The viola can be heard on the Changelings CD
"Amphibian."
